FISHERY ADVICE

EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE
Expert Guidance
Doug is a native of Scotland and has been a “fish-head” for some 40 years. His career represents an unusual journey from marine scientist, to fishermen’s advocate and a senior position with an environmental NGO. Consequently, he has a gained a rare circular perspective and built a solid reputation as a qualified, experienced, and objective professional. Doug worked at the Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen for 14 years. During this period, he collected, analysed and interpreted data on commercial fish stocks and participated in multi-disciplinary research vessel surveys. He also participated in a number of international meetings, workshops and expert working groups. Doug gained an MSc in “Fisheries Science and Resource Management, at Hull University’s International Fisheries Institute (HIFI UK) and then spent nearly a decade at the UK National Federation of Fishermen’s Organizations (NFFO) as an advocate for the catching sector within the UK and Europe. As a fishery scientist he recognized the need for collaborative solutions to the problems of fisheries management and explaining complex issues in a simpler way. Contributing to the DEFRA/ CEFAS Fisheries Science Partnership (FSP) program, Doug was involved in the reform of the European Union Common Fisheries Policy, working with European Regional Advisory Councils and representing European fishers in science and environmental forums.
Doug Beveridge then joined SFP in 2008, most recently Director of SFP’s Global Fishery Improvements Program, travelling extensively. Now an independent consultant, continues to provide the seafood supply chain with strategic fisheries management advice and analysis.
